Thermosteric and dynamic sea level under solar geoengineering

چکیده
Abstract The IPCC sixth assessment report forecasts sea level rise (SLR) of up to 2 m along coasts by 2100 relative 1995–2014 following business as usual (SSP585) scenarios. Geoengineering may reduce this threat. We use five Earth System Models simulations two different solar geoengineering methods (solar dimming and stratospheric sulfate aerosol injection), that offset radiative forcing differences between SSP585 “no-mitigation” the modest mitigation SSP245 greenhouse gas scenarios, analyze impact on global mean thermosteric dynamic regional levels. By 2080–2099, both forms 36–41% (11.2–12.6 cm) SSP585, bringing SLR under in line with SSP245, but do not perfectly restore patterns. Some largest reductions (∼18 are densely populated eastern Northern America Japan vulnerable Arctic coastal permafrost.

Dynamic climate emulators for solar geoengineering
Climate emulators trained on existing simulations can be used to project project the climate effects that result from different possible future pathways of anthropogenic forcing, without further relying on general circulation model (GCM) simulations. We extend this idea to include different amounts of solar geoengineering in addition to different pathways of greenhouse gas concentrations, by tr...
متن کاملClimate Policy under Uncertainty: a Case for Solar Geoengineering∗
Solar Radiation Management (SRM) has two characteristics that make it an attractive means for managing climate risk: it is quick and it is cheap. SRM cannot, however, exactly offset CO2-driven climate change, and its use introduces novel climate and environmental risks. We introduce SRM in a simple economic model of climate change that is designed to explore the interaction between uncertainty ...
متن کاملEfficacy of geoengineering to limit 21st century sea-level rise.
Geoengineering has been proposed as a feasible way of mitigating anthropogenic climate change, especially increasing global temperatures in the 21st century. The two main geoengineering options are limiting incoming solar radiation, or modifying the carbon cycle. Here we examine the impact of five geoengineering approaches on sea level; SO(2) aerosol injection into the stratosphere, mirrors in ...
متن کاملOn solar geoengineering and climate uncertainty
Uncertain climate system response has been raised as a concern regarding solar geoengineering. We explore the effects of geoengineering on one source of climate system uncertainty by evaluating the intermodel spread across 12 climate models participating in the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison project. The model spread in simulations of climate change and the model spread in the response to...
